This 1910 Victorian plaque piece displays a white relief cherub figure against a deep blue ground, enclosed within a decorative moulded timber frame. The artwork is executed in porcelain, wood, gold leaf, and glass, creating a traditional English Country House design vibe. The plaque is set inside a patterned gilt border and mounted on a textured green mat decorated with classical scrolling motifs and urns. The outer timber frame features a rich brown wood grain, pronounced stepped bevels, and an inner band of carved foliate moulding. Lawrence Birks decorated this piece at his studio before relocating to the United States. Signs of age include mild gilt wear and surface weathering on the mount. The dimensions of the piece are 18 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative item suits display on an interior wall or positioned above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or dining space to add classical character to the decor.

Pate-sur-pate, translating to paste-on-paste, is a decorative porcelain technique where translucent ceramic slip is applied in successive layers to build up a relief design on a coloured ground prior to glazing and firing.

The process utilises liquid white porcelain clay slip painted onto an unfired coloured porcelain base, which is subsequently glazed, fired, and typically set within a protective wooden frame.

Genuine examples exhibit fine dimensional slip work with varying degrees of translucency in the thinner areas, frequently accompanied by impressed maker marks or artist signatures on the reverse of the plaque.

Position the framed ceramic artwork as part of an eclectic gallery wall or mount it in a targeted nook, such as above a console or flanking a doorway, to draw attention to the delicate relief detail.

Remove dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, keeping liquid cleansers away from the frame moulding and unglazed ceramic surfaces to prevent moisture entrapment.
