FAQs

Antique doorstops gained popularity during the 19th century as homes grew larger and the need to keep interior doors open for ventilation and servants increased. Foundries began producing heavy cast metal pieces in artistic shapes, turning a utilitarian object into a decorative accessory.

Traditional doorstops from the 19th and early 20th centuries were primarily made from cast bronze, brass, or cast iron. Many pieces featured hand-painted polychrome finishes over the metal base to highlight botanical or figurative details.

Authentic pieces typically feature heavy weight, sand-cast textures on the reverse, and natural wear to the metal and paint consistent with age. Maker marks, registration numbers, or distinct casting seams often help verify the period.

An antique doorstop can be used traditionally on the floor to prop open interior doors, or repurposed on a bookshelf or mantelpiece as a heavy sculptural object and bookend.

Preserve the original patina by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, abrasives, or metal polishes, as these can strip away historic surface finishes and reduce the value.
