This Japanese Arita bowl dates from the 19th century and takes a circular charger form with a dished centre and a raised rim. Made of porcelain with a blue and white cobalt underglaze finish, the piece displays visible metal staples repairing cracks across the body, alongside a hand-painted mountainous landscape scene and intricate diaper pattern borders. It measures 7 cm high and 41 cm wide. Placed on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library, the decorative bowl functions well as a striking display item or centrepiece. The interior surface shows layered scenery with trees, rocks, water, and distant peaks, contrasted against formal geometric patterns around the edges.

Arita porcelain refers to Japanese ceramic ware produced around the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture, known for introducing kaolin-based porcelain production to Japan in the early seventeenth century.

Traditional Arita porcelain is constructed from fine crushed porcelain stone containing kaolin, hand-painted with cobalt oxide underglaze before being fired at high temperatures to achieve a vitreous surface.

Authentic historic Arita ware often exhibits slight irregularities in the glaze, iron spots, visible brushwork in the cobalt underglaze, and distinctive spur marks on the base from kiln firing.

Arita porcelain dishes can be displayed on plate stands within a dark wood cabinet, mounted on wall display racks, or placed flat on a sideboard top as a decorative focal point.

Clean antique porcelain by gentle hand-washing using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive pads, dishwashers, or sudden temperature fluctuations that could induce thermal stress.
