This near pair of antique Japanese Imari bowls, dating from 1900, comprises two decorative porcelain vessels in the traditional Japanese Imari style. Each piece is finished with a white ground glaze decorated in vibrant hand-painted shades of cobalt blue, rust red, orange, and gold leaf highlights. The exterior and interior display intricate floral medallions, leaf patterns, and tree motifs beneath scalloped rims, complemented by underglaze cobalt blue details and distinctive circular floral panels. Both bowls have rounded bodies resting on small circular foot rims, exhibiting fine craftsmanship and traditional decorative motifs typical of this period. The sizes of the bowls are 9 cm by 18 cm by 18 cm for the smaller example and 9.5 cm by 20.5 cm by 20.5 cm for the larger one. Items of this type suit placement on a sideboard top within an English country house interior, serving as decorative accents for display in a living room, dining room, or hallway.

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic manufactured in the Arita area of Hizen province. The name originates from the port of Imari, from where these wares were shipped to Europe and other regions starting in the seventeenth century.

Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures to produce hard-paste porcelain. The iconic decoration involves underglaze cobalt blue painting, followed by a secondary firing for overglaze iron-red enamels and gilded highlights.

Authentic pieces generally display spur marks on the underside base from kiln support pins, slight irregularities in hand-painted motifs, and minor wear on the gilded rims. The palette typically features the classic combination of dark cobalt blue, rust red, and gold.

These decorative bowls can be styled as focal points on sideboards, mantels, or inside display cabinets. The contrast of rich cobalt blue and rust red complements both minimalist contemporary furniture and traditional timber settings.

Clean Imari ceramics using warm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scrubbing pads, or dishwashers, as these will erode delicate overglaze enamels and gilding over time.
