This George III Chippendale period drop-leaf gateleg table originates from the Georgian era. The piece consists of a well-figured dark brown mahogany top with cusped corners and two drop-leaves supported by a gateleg mechanism with visible metal rule joint hinges. The underframe is raised on slender turned legs with small rounded feet, connected by low box stretchers. Measuring 72 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 31 cm deep, this compact table functions effectively in various domestic settings such as a hallway, living room, or narrow dining space. The drop leaves fold down to reduce the footprint against a wall when floor space is limited, and extend to provide a practical surface for display or occasional use.

Produced during the reign of King George III in the mid-to-late 18th century, Chippendale furniture is defined by rich mahogany timber, balanced classical proportions, precise joinery, and refined decorative elements.

Cabinetmakers predominantly used dense West Indian mahogany for the visible tops and legs, paired with oak or pine for internal framing, held together with hand-cut joints and iron rule-joint hinges.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed wood surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron or brass hinges with hand-cut screws, and slight shrinkage along the grain consistent with natural timber ageing.

Position the table with leaves folded down against a wall as a narrow console table, or place it beside seating to serve as an adaptable drinks table that opens up when additional surface space is needed.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments.
