19th century
Description

This stunning HIGH VICTORIAN, possibly FRENCH, PORCELAIN CENTREPIECE, with hand-painted floral sprays to the bowl and TWO BACCHANALIAN CHERUBS beneath GILT VINES, dates from circa 1860.

It would be ideal for holding fruit, especially grapes, which could be arranged to spill over the edges of the bowl.

The colours and gilding are bright.

The condition is good. There is no restoration. There are two tiny chips to the toes, a surface chip to the outside edge of the bowl and one to the back of a gold leaf.

This CENTREPIECE displays beautifully.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Unglazed foot rim with ingrained dirt: decades of standing on show surfaces.
Gilding rubbed through on the plinth mouldings: age and handling wear.
Bisque figures set on glazed porcelain: dual-finish style popular in the 1860s.
Hand-painted floral decoration: enamel painting typical of mid-Victorian continental ceramics.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This high Victorian porcelain centrepiece dates from circa 1860 in the Rococo Revival style. The porcelain construction has a white glaze, bright multicolour enamel decoration of hand-painted floral sprays, and gold leaf gilding. Two sculpted cherubs recline on an oval base beneath gilded foliage and vine scrollwork, supporting a large scalloped rim bowl with a painted landscape scene. The piece exhibits bright colours, two tiny chips to the toes, a surface chip to the outside edge of the bowl, and one to the back of a gold leaf. The physical dimensions measure 30 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep. Position this centrepiece on a dining table or sideboard as a decorative focal point or for holding fruit, particularly grapes arranged to spill over the edges. The ornate figural design and hand-painted details suit traditional interior settings, adding a decorative accent to surfaces in living spaces or dining rooms.

FAQs

A Victorian porcelain cherub centrepiece is an ornate ceramic table ornament produced during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, featuring sculpted putti or cherubs supporting a decorative vessel or bowl. These pieces frequently incorporate Rococo Revival motifs, such as scrollwork, gilded accents, and hand-painted floral motifs.

These items were typically constructed from hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain, cast in multiple mould sections before being assembled by hand. Artisans applied overglaze enamel paints for floral detailing and added liquid gold or gold leaf gilding, which was subsequently fired in a kiln and burnished.

Authentic pieces generally show subtle inconsistencies characteristic of hand-moulding and manual painting, along with natural wear or oxidisation to the gilt areas, particularly on handles and raised edges. Inspect the base for incised model numbers, painter marks, or impressed maker stamps from historic European factories.

Place the piece as a standalone focal point on a contemporary dining table, credenza, or marble sideboard to create visual contrast against clean architectural lines. Surrounding the object with minimal decorative accents ensures its intricate figurative and floral detailing remains the central focus.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry synthetic or feather brush, paying close attention to crevices around the sculpted figures. Avoid immersing the piece in water, using abrasive cloths, or applying chemical solvents, as these methods can strip overglaze enamels and original gilding.
