Nineteenth-century framing styles often feature classical revival motifs, such as egg and dart or acanthus leaf patterns, finished with applied gold leaf over gesso and timber.

Authentic period frames typically utilise a carved or moulded wooden base substrate, coated with multiple layers of gesso and bole before the application of thin gold leaf sheets.

Authentication involves inspecting the corner joints, the crazing or micro-cracking of the aged gesso layer, the presence of hand-carved detailing versus resin casting, and the type of backing or fixings used.

Pairing an ornate gilded frame with a modern abstract canvas or an antique convex mirror creates a striking focal point that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist design.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a dry, ultra-soft artists brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding all water, liquid solvents, and abrasive cleaners.
