FAQs

Antique wall candle boxes were commonly used in homes before the widespread availability of gas or electric lighting to safely store and organise tallow or wax candles near doorways or hearths.

They were typically constructed from local timbers such as oak or pine, utilising traditional joinery techniques such as dovetailed corners, pegged joints, and shaped backplates with hanging apertures.

Authenticity is identified by examining the natural patina, tool marks, timber shrinkage, hand-cut nails or traditional joinery, and wear patterns consistent with age and regular handling.

These pieces can be mounted on a wall in a hallway or kitchen to hold letters, dried botanicals, or small everyday items, adding rustic texture and historical character to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations, occasionally treating the surface with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood without stripping its patina.
