This George III open wine cooler belongs to the nineteenth century, executed in warm brown Spanish mahogany with brass and metal hardware. The oval basin holds an original zinc liner encircled by two parallel brass bands secured with rivets, and cast brass lion-mask ring handles adorn the sides. The raised stand incorporates a cross-banded frieze with a gadroon moulding along the lower edge, supported on four fluted square legs. Acanthus-carved capitals ornament the knees of the legs, which terminate in plain block feet. Natural timber grain and gentle surface wear appear across the polished wooden elements. Measuring 81 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, this piece functions well in an empty corner of a living room or dining area to display plants, hold blankets, or serve as a decorative planter. Traditional English country house interiors provide a fitting backdrop for the heritage design, bringing period charm and practical storage capacity into a modern home layout.

Open wine coolers, also known as wine cisterns or cellarettes, gained prominence during the George III era in 18th-century Britain. Designed to be kept in dining rooms, they were filled with ice to chill wine bottles within reach of the host and dinner guests.

Craftsmen constructed these vessels primarily from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, securing the staves with brass binding straps. Metal liners, typically fabricated from lead or zinc, were fitted internally to contain ice and moisture without damaging the surrounding timber.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, hand-carved decorative knee details such as acanthus leaves, and natural oxidisation on original brass straps and carrying handles. Internal surfaces usually show historic wear or evidence of original lead lining.

An open wine cooler operates as a distinctive sculptural accent in a formal dining room, entryway, or lounge space. It can be positioned near a sideboard or in a corner to showcase historic craftsmanship while serving as a functional beverage display during gatherings.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and wipe metal components dry to preserve historic patination.
