Taxidermy mounts and horn trophies gained immense popularity during the Victorian era as a reflection of exploration, natural history, and hunting expeditions, later evolving into decorative interior accessories.

Authentic specimens typically consist of natural keratin horns mounted onto carved wooden shields, such as oak or mahogany, often featuring a central metal bracket for wall hanging.

Authenticity is determined by examining the natural wear, organic texture, colour variation of the keratin, and the construction methods of the wooden backplate and hardware.

These pieces work well as focal points on dark feature walls, paired with rich textures like leather, timber, and heavy textiles to create a layered, academic atmosphere.

Preservation requires keeping the specimen away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the keratin from cracking, alongside gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
