Description

A super pair of Georgian coasters, easily big enough to hold decanters as well as wine bottles.

They are simply shaped, with raised borders terminating in fluted edges. The base black colour has a great shine which is embellished with a simple gold decoration - Two concentric circles just inside the fluted edges, a further wider gold circle where the sides rise from the base and a very pretty collection of stars on the base.

As you would expect, some of the gold has worn - the stars rather than the circles - and there is damage to one part of the edging, which is shown in the photographs.

Dimensions:

Height: 2cm

Diameter: 17cm

Internal diameter: 11.5cm.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

FAQs

Papier-mache gained significant popularity in Britain during the late 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in centres such as Birmingham and Wolverhampton, where manufacturers utilised layers of paper pulp, glue, and chalk pressed under intense heat to create durable, lightweight objects.

Traditional pieces were constructed using compressed paper sheets or pulp treated with linseed oil and resins to achieve a hard, wood-like consistency, followed by multiple coats of dark lacquer and hand-painted or inlaid ornamentation.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight, the presence of crazing or cracking in the lacquer finish, hand-applied gilt or inlay details, and the structural integrity of the compressed paper core rather than modern synthetic resins.

These pieces function effectively as functional table accents on sideboards or coffee tables, bringing historic texture, dark tones, and subtle metallic contrast to modern or traditional room schemes.

Preservation requires keeping items away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding all moisture, chemical polishes, or abrasive cleaners to protect the delicate lacquer and gilt surfaces.
