This Victorian oak writing table dates from circa 1860, originating within the 1800 period. The piece presents a dark brown finish with a green leather inset top set into a moulded edge. Relief-carved decoration adorns the frieze aprons all the way around, complemented by turned trestle uprights, a central stretcher with turned balusters, and carved scroll feet fitted with original brass castors. Wooden pendants hang beneath the corners of the frieze. Measuring 71 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, the table accommodates placement away from a wall in a study, library, or home office. The writing surface provides a dedicated workspace for writing, reading, or laptop use, while the freestanding capability allows flexible positioning in the middle of a room. The sturdy construction supports daily tasks, and the compact proportions suit smaller rooms as well as larger interior spaces. The Victorian design style integrates readily with traditional or eclectic furniture schemes.

Mid-Victorian carved oak writing tables typically feature intricate relief carving, sturdy turned or trestle legs, and leather-inset surfaces designed for correspondence and reading.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid oak or walnut, incorporating hand-joined timber framing alongside tool-embossed or plain leather top inserts.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, natural timber contraction, hand-cut joinery, and consistent wear patterns on lower stretchers and feet.

A mid-19th century writing table works effectively as a focal hallway console, a dedicated study desk, or an accent piece positioned behind a sofa paired with understated contemporary lighting.

Clean the oak timber using natural beeswax polish applied along the grain, and treat the leather writing surface with specialised leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
