Antique Victorian Converted Burr Walnut Writing Table C.1870

19th century
Description

A Victorian burr walnut writing table, sympathetically adapted from a period card table, the later inset gilt-tooled green leather writing surface set within its original finely figured burr walnut border and moulded edge, set over a deep figured walnut frieze with architectural corner blocks above four solid walnut hand-carved, turned and fluted legs terminating in original brass castors.

Finished on all elevations allowing for freestanding placement, its compact footprint and generous apron height make it uniquely suited to a smaller study or floating effortlessly within a bedroom or drawing room.

Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age and careful adaptation. Structurally sound throughout with smooth-rolling castors, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1870.

This Victorian writing table dates from circa 1870 and follows a traditional gentleman's library design, having been sympathetically adapted from a period card table. The piece is constructed from burr walnut and solid walnut with a dark brown timber finish, featuring a green leather inset top with a gilt-tooled border, architectural corner blocks, and brass castors. Visible details include finely figured wood grain, carved corner brackets, moulded table edges, and fluted turned legs with rounded turning elements. Minor surface wear consistent with age is present on the wooden surfaces. The table measures 71.5 cm high by 94 cm wide and 52.5 cm deep, providing a compact footprint suitable for freestanding placement. In a contemporary home, this item works well in a smaller study, bedroom, or drawing room as a functional workspace or decorative writing surface.

Victorian writing tables from the late nineteenth century are defined by sturdy hardwood construction, turned or carved leg details, and functional writing surfaces, frequently featuring gilt-tooled leather inserts.

Craftsmen typically utilised woods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak, often layering decorative burr veneers over solid frames. Secondary components included brass castors, steel fasteners, and gold-tooled leather surfaces.

Authentic pieces from this period often display hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and timber displaying genuine age marks. Leg turnings and carved details tend to show slight asymmetries indicative of hand-finishing.

An antique writing desk can be integrated into a modern home office or living room by pairing it with a minimalist chair and contemporary task lighting. The rich wood tones create a grounding focal point against neutral walls and clean architectural lines.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, wiping along the grain. Clean the leather insert using a slightly damp cloth and specialised leather conditioner, while keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
