Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Desks from these eras are known for their rich burr walnut veneers, balanced classical proportions, brass drop handles, and supportive bracket feet or cabriole legs. Pedestal and kneehole configurations were designed to provide ample drawer storage alongside comfortable leg space.

These pieces typically feature burr walnut veneers laid over a solid wood substrate such as pine or oak, solid oak or pine drawer linings, cast brass drop handles, and a hide leather insert on the writing surface.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, thick hand-cut veneers rather than paper-thin modern veneers, natural oxidisation on original brass fittings, and smooth wear consistent with age around the kneehole and drawer runners.

Place the desk against a neutral backdrop to highlight the wood grain, pairing it with modern task lighting and contemporary artwork to create an understated contrast between traditional woodwork and contemporary design elements.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading, nourish the wood with natural beeswax, and treat the leather writing top with specialist leather balm to maintain flexibility.
