This English figured walnut writing desk dates from the Rococo Revival period around 1870. The wood displays a warm amber brown tone with distinct grain patterns and featherbanded drawer borders. Supported on slender cabriole legs, the design incorporates a raised superstructure at the rear containing four small stationery drawers, accompanied by a single drawer positioned beneath the writing slide. Cast brass or ormolu mounts adorn the exterior, including decorative escutcheons and handles on the drawers alongside mounts on the legs and apron. The back is polished, allowing the piece to stand free in an interior space. Measuring 96.5 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the desk functions as a practical writing table or workspace in a study, drawing room, or home office. The compact proportions and finished rear surface make it suitable for placement in the centre of a room rather than strictly against a wall, providing storage for correspondence while maintaining a decorative presence within a traditional or eclectic interior scheme.

A bonheur du jour is a style of small ladies writing desk that originated in 18th-century France, characterized by a flat writing table topped with a raised rear superstructure containing small drawers or compartments.

Cabinetmakers used figured or burr walnut veneers laid over solid oak or pine frames, complemented by cast brass or ormolu handle mounts and decorative escutcheons.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, natural oxidisation on the timber underside, original brass hardware with aged patina, and crossbanded edge detailing.

Position the piece in a bright alcove or living space, pairing its warm wood tones with a modern neutral chair or understated lamp to contrast historical craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid drying.
