This Victorian bonheur du jour is a French Revival writing desk made from warm brown burr walnut with marquetry inlay, ormolu mounts, glass, and a mirror. The piece stands on curved cabriole legs decorated with gilt bronze ormolu mounts on the shoulders and feet, and features an upper superstructure containing twin glazed cabinets with red interiors flanking a central mirror plate above a small drawer. Elaborate floral marquetry decorates the slant-front writing lid and the shaped frieze below, complemented by ornate brass key escutcheons and handles. The desk measures 140 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. It serves as a decorative and functional writing desk or display workspace in a principal reception room or study.

A bonheur du jour is a type of ladys writing desk introduced in Paris during the 1760s. It typically features a compact writing surface topped by a raised rear superstructure containing small drawers, cabinets, or a central mirror.

These writing tables are predominantly constructed with decorative wood veneers such as burr walnut, rosewood, or kingwood, complemented by intricate marquetry or parquetry inlays. Gilt-bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, are frequently applied to edges, corners, and leg feet.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, finely chased gilt-metal mounts, and genuine wood veneer applied over a solid timber core. Signs of hand-planing on the back and underside, along with natural oxidisation on metal fittings, indicate period construction.

Due to its compact proportions, a bonheur du jour functions effectively as a decorative writing desk or dressing table in a bedroom, study, or hallway alcove. Positioning the piece against a simple, neutral wall allows the detailed marquetry and curved silhouette to remain the primary visual focus.

Position the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement or fading. Maintain the polished finish by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish sparingly along the grain.
