This unusual mid-Victorian work table from 1870 is constructed from warm brown walnut with contrasting satinwood marquetry inlay. The circular top displays a central panel depicting a mounted warrior and a lion within a decorative floral border, and lifts on a hinge to reveal internal compartments. Beneath the frieze, decorated with further floral marquetry and raised vertical beading, hang small turned drop pendants. The trumpet-shaped body tapers down to a turned central column resting on a carved tripod base with cabriole legs and curled feet. Measuring 77 cm high with a 44 cm diameter, this piece suits placement as an accent table or end table beside a sofa in a living room or study. It provides accessible surface space alongside functional interior storage for sewing supplies or small items while adding nineteenth-century decorative character to an interior.

A Victorian trumpet work box is a specialised piece of nineteenth-century occasional furniture designed with a conical or trumpet-shaped body to hold needlework supplies, thread, and craft tools.

These tables were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often decorated with floral marquetry inlays, turned wooden pendants, and carved legs.

Authentic pieces feature period construction details such as hand-cut marquetry inlays, original brass hinges, tripod carved bases, and often a hinged lid opening to internal compartments.

A Victorian work box functions well as an occasional side table next to an armchair, positioned within a reading corner, or placed in a hallway to introduce historical character.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the veneered surface, and clean gently with a soft cloth followed by clear beeswax polish.
