This large Victorian terracotta tobacco container depicts a seated pug dog by Bernard Bloch, dating from the period around 1880 to 1900. Modelled in a reddish-brown ceramic finish, the sculpture shows the attentive animal in a seated pose with a curled tail, a wrinkled snout, and a distinctive green studded collar around its neck. The base is stamped with the maker mark BB and Austria. The sculpture measures 24.2 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. Suited for a gentleman library, this piece sits well upon a mantelpiece to display an antique decorative object in a home today.

Produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by prominent Austrian manufacturers such as Bernard Bloch, these terracotta figures captured realistic animal forms with characterful expressions and detailed anatomical modeling.

They were typically slip-cast or hand-moulded using fine earthenware clay, fired at low temperatures, and decorated with cold paints, glazes, or patinas to simulate realistic textures.

Authentic pieces frequently feature impressed maker marks, mould numbers, or country stamps on the underside, alongside hand-finished details and surface patina consistent with age.

Place the figure on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard top to introduce historic character, warm earth tones, and tactile texture alongside contemporary decor.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that might strip cold-painted surfaces or delicate patinas.
