This pair of console tables dates from the nineteen hundreds and belongs to the neoclassical style. Each piece comprises a rectangular green variegated faux marble top above a gilded, shaped frieze that displays visible marks from the sheets of gold leaf. The structure is supported at the front by two carved mythological centaur figures and at the rear by rectangular legs with fielded panels. The framework incorporates a gilded bottom shelf resting on a moulded, enclosed plinth base, all finished in a consistent gold colour. Measuring 96 cm high, 92 cm wide and 52 cm deep, these sturdy tables fit comfortably in an entrance hall beside the front door or along a principal hallway. In a modern interior, they serve as a striking display surface for decorative objects, lamps or floral arrangements, adding architectural interest to reception spaces.

FAQs

Classical style console tables incorporate motifs inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture and mythology, including carved figural supports such as centaurs, caryatids, or terms. These pieces often feature gilding, geometric moulding, and heavy stone or marble tops.

These tables are traditionally constructed from a carved wooden framework, often lime or pine, coated in gesso and finished with leaf gilding. Tops are frequently inlaid or solid slabs of decorative marble or scagliola.

Authentic giltwood displays natural signs of age, including fine surface cracking (craquelure), light surface oxidisation, and wear where the underlying bole or gesso shows through. Hand-carved details also display subtle variations rather than precise machine-made symmetry.

Pairing console tables symmetrically in a foyer, grand hallway, or flanking a central architectural element creates structure. Placing them along a narrow wall space with oversized mirrors mounted above balances traditional carving with modern scale.

Gilded wood surfaces should be dusted dry using a soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which dissolve gesso. Marble tops require cleaning with pH-neutral soap solutions and immediate drying to prevent staining.
