Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Solid single-board mahogany top: wide timber typical before old-growth supplies grew scarce.
Square tapering legs: refined neoclassical cabinet work fashionable from the 1780s.
Incised scratch bead on the drawer front: traditional late Georgian decorative detailing.
Deep sun fading across the top: long exposure to daylight over generations.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This late eighteenth-century George III side table exemplifies classic English country house style from the Georgian period. Fashioned from warm brown mahogany with brass hardware, the piece displays a bow-fronted top with an overhang to the rear, a frieze drawer fitted with old replacement cast-brass knob handles, and square section tapering legs. Visible details include fading and shadowing to the centre of the top from sunlight exposure, a minor shrinkage crack to one end, and incised simulated cock-beading along the drawer edges. Measuring 71 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this practical occasional furniture piece works well beside the front door or in a hallway for surface display and small item storage.

FAQs

George III period side tables, dating from 1760 to 1820, are defined by classical proportions, clean straight lines, and the extensive use of dense mahogany wood, frequently featuring single frieze drawers and square tapered legs.

Cabinetmakers utilised solid mahogany, often incorporating hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, oak or pine secondary woods for drawer linings, and hand-turned brass knob or brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, evidence of hand-planing on underside surfaces, natural age shrinkage marks in the timber grain, and patination around original brass hardware.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway paired with a contemporary mirror above it, or utilise it as a compact desk alongside modern lighting to contrast traditional cabinetmaking with contemporary design.

Preserve mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and radiators, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish.
