George III Egyptian Revival Plum Pudding Mahogany Supper Table

18th century
Description

An outstanding 18th Century Egyptian revival supper table with ebony inlaid chamfered top and frieze drawers. The drawers are flanked by gilt brass Egyptian mask head and drop ring mounts to each corner. The table is raised on twin tapering pillars, hipped and splayed legs, terminating with lion paw feet and under castors. The pillars and legs are also ebony inlaid. Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 ignited a great interest in Egyptian art and furniture design. This Georgian George III Egyptian revival supper table is made from warm brown plum pudding mahogany with ebony inlay detailing. The drop-leaf table stands on splayed legs with brass paw castors and features gilt brass lion mask ring handles mounted to the corners of the frieze drawers. The timber displays a polished finish and natural grain patterning across the rectangular top and folding leaves. The dimensions are 71 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 53 cm deep with the leaves down. This versatile piece fits into a modern home as an entryway console, a compact dining table, or a decorative side table in a living room or hallway.

Emerging in the late 18th and early 19th centuries following European expeditions to Egypt, this style incorporates motifs such as sphinxes, lion masks, pharaoh heads, and claw feet into traditional English cabinetmaking forms.

Cabinetmakers during this period primarily utilised solid mahogany and highly figured veneers, such as plum pudding or flame mahogany, paired with cast brass mounts, castors, and contrasting wood stringing or inlays.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, natural timber shrinkage along grain lines, hand-chased brass hardware displaying age-related oxidisation, and original wooden or brass castors.

A drop-leaf table functions flexibly in modern settings as an accent side table, a compact hallway piece, or a flexible occasional table positioned adjacent to contemporary upholstered seating.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish annually, while keeping the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuations in humidity.
