This George III Pembroke table from the eighteenth century exhibits a Georgian style in warm amber satinwood, kingswood, and brass. The shaped top is crossbanded and includes a central oval panel painted with winged cherubs, alongside painted foliate scrolls, quivers of arrows, and ribboned spears on the drop-down flaps. Additional details comprise a satinwood frieze drawer with circular brass ring handles, square tapering legs with painted oval paterae at the top, and further string inlay. The table measures 72 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 48 cm deep when closed, extending to 98 cm wide when open. In a modern home, it suits placement at the end of a sofa or as a compact side table in a sitting room.

Introduced in Britain during the mid-18th century and named after the Countess of Pembroke, the Pembroke table was designed as a versatile, space-saving occasional table. Featuring hinged drop leaves and a drawer, it was commonly used for serving tea, writing, or light dining in Georgian reception rooms.

High-end Georgian Pembroke tables were constructed using fine cabinet woods such as satinwood, mahogany, kingwood, and tulipwood. Decorative details frequently incorporated brass drop handles or castors, boxwood stringing, and delicate hand-painted vignettes using oil or lacquer finishes.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the frieze drawers, original wooden fly-bracket supports for the leaves, and thin, hand-cut veneers. Painted decorations should exhibit subtle Craquelure and realistic patination consistent with late 18th-century Neoclassical motifs rather than modern stencilling.

A Pembroke table functions exceptionally well as a side table adjacent to a sofa, an entryway console table with leaves extended, or an accent piece in a bay window. Its compact proportions allow it to transition seamlessly between formal period settings and contemporary eclectic schemes.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting or paint degradation. Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid polishes or harsh chemical solvents that could dissolve historical painted details.
