This freestanding 19th-century Gothic Revival lectern consists of a warm brown carved oak structure standing 151 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 63 cm deep. The top features a carved eagle with its wings outstretched in flight and talons clasping a ball, resting above a castellated top. The octagonal Gothic column includes shaped and carved vertical supports that extend down to a triform base fitted with steel casters, whilst displaying distinct wood grain patterns across its rich timber surfaces. Suitable for use in a home library, study, or ecclesiastical interior, the piece serves as an imposing architectural reading stand. The sturdy column and substantial base provide a stable platform, while the integrated book rest positioned beneath the eagle's wings offers a practical surface for reading large volumes or displaying open books. Steel casters attached to the base allow for straightforward repositioning across interior floor surfaces.

Eagle lecterns emerged in the medieval period and gained renewed popularity during the 19th-century Gothic Revival movement. The eagle traditionally symbolises St John the Evangelist, whose gospel was considered to soar to high theological heights, making it a standard motif for supporting sacred texts.

These pieces were typically carved from dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut. Craftsmen used traditional joinery, including mortise and tenon joints, with hand-carved feathers and architectural detailing on the central column.

Authentic period lecterns exhibit hand-tool marks, variable oxidation in recessed carving details, and natural wear around the base and book ledge. Construction methods show hand-fitted joinery rather than modern machine precision.

A carved lectern functions as a sculptural statement piece in a study, library, or entrance hallway. It can be utilized to display large art monographs, historic atlases, or open guest books.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking or cracking of the wood.
