Japanese pictorial embroidery, known as nihon shishu, has a rich history dating back centuries, gaining significant prominence during the Meiji period when artisans perfected hyper-realistic techniques to appeal to Western export markets.

These panels typically feature fine silk threads, often incorporating metallic gold or silver threads, worked onto a silk satin or linen ground fabric, usually housed within a lacquered or faux-bamboo wooden frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit meticulous split-stitch work, couched metallic threads, hand-dyed natural fibres, and signs of age such as slight oxidisation of the metal threads and natural fading of the ground silk.

This piece can be mounted as a focal point on a neutral wall to highlight its intricate texture, pairing well with minimalist furnishings or traditional eclectic schemes.

To preserve antique textiles, mount them away from direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and fading, maintain stable indoor humidity, and use UV-filtering glass if framed.
