Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1870 Aesthetic Movement plant stand is constructed from ebonised wood with brass studs and hand-painted floral porcelain tiles. The round upper and lower surfaces display multi-coloured painted flower motifs against a white ground, bordered by dark wood frames embellished with metallic hardware and gilded accents. Turned columns support the tiers, terminating in splayed feet finished in black and gold. Practical measurements are 78 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. Suitable for an empty corner, the piece functions as a decorative display table in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The design accommodates potted plants, vases, or decorative objects on its dual tiers. The compact footprint makes it adaptable for compact spaces while adding Victorian character to interior settings.

FAQs

Popularised during the Aesthetic Movement of the late Victorian era, ebonised furniture featured dark, blackened wood designed to imitate Asian lacquerware. These stands frequently incorporated hand-painted ceramic tiles or porcelain plaques, reflecting the periods focus on botanical motifs and art for arts sake.

These pieces were commonly constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or beech, which were stained black and lacquered to achieve an ebonised finish. Decorative elements frequently included hand-painted porcelain tiles, gilt metal fittings, and turned wooden columns.

Authentic Victorian examples feature genuine hand-painted ceramic tiles showing subtle glaze variations, hand-turned timber supports, and aged ebonised finishes exhibiting natural surface patina. Look for period joinery underneath the tiers and original metal hardware embellishments.

Position the stand in a sunlit alcove or corner to display a trailing houseplant, such as a fern or pothos, contrasting green foliage against the dark timber. Alternatively, use it as a compact accent table beside an armchair or to elevate a small decorative sculpture.

Dust the wooden structure regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can compromise the lacquered finish. Clean the porcelain plaques gently using a slightly damp cloth, ensuring moisture does not seep beneath the wooden surrounds.
