Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Embossed rosette ground on paper: decorative technique common in Victorian revival interiors.
Darkened, yellowed varnish over the flowers and birds: prolonged exposure to room air.
Rubbed outer leather borders and oxidised studs: wear from long handling.
Plain ebonised timber framing to the back: standard mid-19th-century screen framing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A 19th-century Dutch four-fold floor screen and room divider stands ready to define a gentleman's library or empty corner. The construction combines a wooden framework with embossed paper panels, brass hardware, and leather-bound edges. Dark brown, orange, and muted green tones dominate the polychrome Chinoiserie decoration, which presents a continuous scene of exotic birds and blossom vignettes across the panels, framed by broad borders showing vases with floral displays. Signs of age include minor wear and scuffs to the leather binding, along with a replaced vertical leather strip between two panels. Measuring 196 cm in height, 218 cm in width, and 5 cm in depth, this screen functions effectively as a room divider or stands flat as a wall-mounted decorative feature. The surfaces display hand-painted botanical motifs and urns, while studded leather borders finish the panels.

During the 19th century, Dutch folding screens served both functional and decorative roles in European households, shielding seating areas from drafts while displaying detailed artwork. Influenced by earlier Asian lacquer partitions and classical Dutch floral painting, these items featured multi-panel arrangements displaying botanical and avian motifs.

Traditional 19th-century screens feature an internal timber frame supporting painted canvas or embossed paper panels. Edges were typically finished with leather bindings secured by hand-driven brass studs or iron tacks, connected by metal hinges to allow flexible positioning.

Authentic period examples exhibit age-consistent surface craquelure, patinated brass tacks, and wear along the leather trim. Construction features handmade hinges, solid timber framing beneath the paper or canvas, and hand-painted pigments rather than modern mechanical print processes.

A painted screen can be placed in an empty corner to add height and depth, positioned behind a sofa as a focal point, or mounted flat against a wall as architectural artwork. The warm brown tones and botanical imagery complement both traditional schemes and minimalist modern settings.

Position the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent shrinking of the leather and cracking of the painted finish. Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, oils, or solvent-based polishes.
