Antique 'Chuval' (Storage-bag), Qashqa'i Nomads, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

19th century
Description

Illustrated in my 3rd edition 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent', this magnificent storage-bag was woven in intricate complementary weft-weave technique by Qashqa'i nomads during the last quarter of the nineteenth century in Fars Province, south-west Persia.

The work, as described in my book, is exemplary, bearing in mind the bag was an everyday utilitarian item, used to contain and transport clothes, bedding, pots and pans etc. and shows the skill and artistry that went into making these bags. The sides, handles and loops at the top are bound in strong goat-hair for resilience.

This is a rare and beautiful work of nomadic art which has been in my personal collection for many years and to which I have now decided to part with - rather sadly!

Size: 90cm x 69cm (3' 0" x 2' 3").

Date of Manufacture

Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this Antique Qashqai Chuval Bag to the 1880s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Braided dark goat-hair selvedges and loops: traditional Southwest Persian nomadic construction.
Fine complementary-weft weave pattern: hand weaving on a horizontal ground loom.
Soft colour variations in the bands: yarn dyed in small batches with plant dyes.
Gentle rubbing along the dark outer binding: generations of domestic tribal use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This antique Qashqa'i chuval storage-bag originates from the Fars Province of south-west Persia and dates to 1880, produced in the complementary weft-weave technique using hand-spun wool and natural dyes. The surface displays horizontal rows of terracotta red, indigo, yellow, and cream woven patterns, including chevron bands, diamond lattices, and small braided side handles alongside top loops bound in goat-hair for resilience. The piece measures 90 cm high by 69 cm wide. Today, this textile suits placement on a narrow wall space as a wall hanging within a Persian tribal interior. The utilitarian item historically contained clothes, bedding, pots, and pans, reflecting the practical domestic role of tribal textiles among nomadic communities.

A chuval is a traditional large storage bag hand-woven by nomadic tribes, such as the Qashqai of Fars Province in South-West Persia, used for transporting bedding and household goods during seasonal migrations.

These pieces are constructed predominantly from hand-spun sheeps wool dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments, featuring flat-weave (kilim) or brocaded sumak techniques with geometric patterning.

Authentic tribal chuvals display natural dye variations known as abrash, slight structural irregularities from portable looms, original side loops or hand-braided selvedges, and specific clan motifs.

These woven textiles are frequently displayed mounted on walls as decorative art, suspended on rods, or stuffed to serve as low floor cushions and ottoman seating.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, vacuum gently using low suction without a rotating brush, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialized dry cleaning.
