When fully extended, the top provides an area that accommodates four people in comfort, making it suitable for placement in a living room, drawing room, or study.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th century, a Georgian fold-over card table is a multi-functional piece of furniture designed for parlour games, featuring a hinged top that opens to reveal a green baize playing surface supported by a swinging leg mechanism.

These tables were constructed using hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often decorated with satinwood stringing or marquetry, and lined with woven wool baize on the playing surface.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, original timber swing hinges, authentic underside oxidation, and proportioned turned or tapered legs characteristic of 18th-century cabinetmaking.

When folded closed, the table functions as a console or side table positioned against a hallway wall or reception room alcove, topped with a table lamp or decorative ceramics.

Maintain the timber by applying high-grade beeswax polish along the grain, keep the table away from direct heat sources, and brush the baize playing surface gently with a soft cloth to clear dust.
