This Georgian card table dates from the eighteenth century, specifically around 1760. It is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown colour and a glowing patina, possessing a fold-over top with a serpentine front and fluted square-cut legs decorated with carved foliate spandrels at the corners, alongside applied carved mouldings beneath the rails on all sides and brass hinges. The piece measures 73 cm high and 84 cm wide, standing on four upright legs. It suits a narrow wall space in a sitting room, hallway, or study today, providing a useful surface for display or card games when opened against a wall.

Popularised during the Georgian period, card tables were specialized pieces of furniture designed for parlour games. They typically featured a fold-over top that rested against a wall when closed, serving as a side table, and unfolded to reveal a playing surface.

Georgian card tables were primarily crafted from Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain. Construction methods featured hand-cut dovetail joints, gate-leg or fly-leg support mechanisms, and decorative elements such as fluting and flame veneer.

Authentic pieces display signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-planed secondary woods like pine or oak, original brass card hinges, hand-cut joinery, and natural patination along the edges and legs.

When closed, a card table functions as a console table in an entryway or living room, ideal for holding a lamp and decorative objects. It can also be placed behind a sofa or in a reading nook.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent warping and bleaching. Clean the surface with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood finish.
