Antique Edwardian Brass Pedestal Jardinière C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian brass pedestal jardinière, the campana-form urn with a gadrooned rim and foliate calyx, raised on a reeded baluster stem over a stepped circular socle and octagonal plinth base.

Executed in thick-walled, sand-cast brass with sectional joinery, the piece combines a substantial gauge with crisp relief, reflecting the disciplined Edwardian revival of classical Regency metalwork.

Very good antique condition, the brass displaying an honest patina, minor surface marks and authentic historic calcification to the interior bowl. Structurally sound and ready to place.

This antique Edwardian pedestal jardinière is a classical brass object dating from circa 1910, finished in a polished gold colour. The thick-walled, sand-cast piece exhibits crisp relief through its campana-form urn, gadrooned rim, foliate calyx, reeded baluster stem, stepped circular socle, and octagonal plinth base. Visible details include sectional joinery, an honest patina on the brass, minor surface marks, and authentic historic calcification inside the bowl, confirming its very good antique condition. Measuring 66 cm high, 29.5 cm wide, and 29.5 cm deep, it provides a stable stand for interior planting. Position this jardinière in a sunlit conservatory or by a bay window to hold flowering plants or greenery, allowing natural light to highlight the metallic surface and traditional ornamentation. It suits classic or period-inspired interiors as a decorative focal point in a hallway, living room, or garden room, serving as a functional planter that brings elevated plant display into domestic spaces.

An Edwardian pedestal jardiniere is an elevated decorative vessel designed to display potted plants indoors, popular during the early 20th century. Characterised by classical proportions and polished metalwork, these items reflected the eras emphasis on bringing conservatory botany into formal living spaces.

Edwardian jardinieres were commonly crafted from sheet or cast brass, copper, mahogany, or majolica ceramic. Brass examples frequently feature fluted columns, lobed rims, and weighted octagonal or square bases for stability.

Authentic Edwardian brass items typically show subtle construction joins, period maker stamps, and natural oxidisation within recessed detailing. The decorative motifs lean towards Neoclassical symmetry with gadrooned or fluted elements rather than heavier Victorian ornamentation.

Position a brass pedestal jardiniere in a bay window, entrance foyer, or alcove to add vertical interest and metallic reflection. Displaying trailing foliage, such as ferns or ivy, creates a contrast between the structured brass column and natural greenery.

Dust the item regularly using a dry microfibre cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina, opting instead for gentle brass polishes used sparingly or leaving the aged finish untouched.
