This Victorian mahogany desk or writing table dates from circa 1860 and provides a practical surface for writing or working. The piece is constructed from well-figured mahogany in a warm rich shade with a striking grain, displaying a good patina along with age-related wear, marks, and small filled holes on the top surface where a gallery rail was once fitted. Below the rectangular top, two frieze drawers are integrated into the frieze, each fitted with a round wooden knob handle. The entire structure is supported by four solid turned legs with ring and bulbous turnings tapering towards the feet. Measuring 75 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, this writing table offers generous workspace and storage while maintaining a shallow footprint suitable for domestic placement. It sits comfortably in a study, home office, or living room as a traditional writing desk or side table, blending well with English Country House interiors and coordinating effortlessly with both period and contemporary seating.

Victorian writing desks typically feature compact proportions, turned timber legs, and hand-dovetailed drawers designed for domestic study or correspondence work during the 19th century.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era frequently utilised solid mahogany, pine drawer linings, and turned wooden knobs alongside traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original turned timber knobs, natural patination from age, and characteristic Victorian lathe-turned leg profiles.

A Victorian writing table serves effectively as a compact home office workstation, an entryway console table, or a bedroom vanity unit when paired with contemporary seating.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax polish along the wood grain while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
