FAQs

Porcelain table lamps featuring blue and white decoration originate from Eastern ceramic traditions that gained widespread popularity across Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Vases and urns were frequently converted into electrical lamps, becoming central decorative elements in traditional interiors.

These lamps are constructed using hard-paste or soft-paste glazed ceramic porcelain bases, often mounted onto turned brass, bronze, or wooden plinths. Shades are generally constructed from pleated silk, cotton, or linen framed with wire.

Authentic pieces often showcase hand-painted cobalt underglaze decoration rather than modern transfer prints. Look for drilling holes near the lower base where conversions were completed, historical maker marks beneath the foot, and period-appropriate cast brass mountings.

Place a porcelain table lamp on a dark wood sideboard, console, or bedside chest to create contrast. Pair it with structured stacks of art books, botanical prints, or minimalist ceramics to balance traditional pattern with contemporary decor.

Dust the porcelain base regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that may damage older glazes or gilt mounts. Dust silk or fabric pleated shades gently with a soft-bristled brush or low-suction vacuum attachment.
