19th century
Description

Dating to around 1870, this delightful small silk embroidery was created by the Lakai, a tribal group from Uzbekistan, and was originally made to be used either as a pouch or for decoration. Finely worked on the distinctive aubergine silk background often associated with the Lakai embroiderers, the field design depicts a samovar floating above a bed of leaves within a mihrab. It is so charming and elegant. The spandrels and borders are filled with more sprigs and leaves, creating a delightful composition. This Central Asian folk art wall hanging dates to 1870 and originates from the Lakai tribal group of Uzbekistan. The rectangular panel consists of an aubergine purple silk background decorated with multicoloured chain stitch silk embroidery in red, green, and yellow. A central samovar teapot motif sits above a bed of leaves within an arch, surrounded by a floral arch border and finished with a bottom fringed trim. The piece measures 52 cm high and 42 cm wide. In a contemporary home, the textile fits into a narrow wall space or a small niche as decorative wall art. The construction involves silk and cotton thread, presenting an intact lining and retaining its original condition. The border displays symmetrical floral sprigs, whilst the hanging is secured at the top edge with metal pins against a plain surface.

Lakai embroidery refers to traditional needlework produced by the Lakai tribe, a formerly nomadic Uzbek group situated in Central Asia. These textiles are recognized for their intense colour palettes, dense chain-stitch execution, and symbolic motifs rendered on dark silk or cotton foundations.

Craftspeople predominantly used naturally dyed silk threads stitched onto woven silk or cotton ground fabrics. The primary technique involved detailed tambour or chain stitching, forming defined outlines and solid filled patterns across the fabric surface.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature natural vegetable dyes, hand-spun silk threads, and traditional motif arrangements such as ewers, palmettes, and architectural niches. Examination of the reverse side typically reveals hand-stitched construction and slight variations in thread tension indicative of manual craft.

Textile panels can be mounted inside custom perspex display boxes or stretched over padded frames to protect the fibres while displaying the design. Hanging these textiles above sideboards or in narrow alcoves introduces depth, texture, and historical interest to modern spaces.

Silk textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fibre degradation and dye fading. Cleaning should be restricted to conservation specialists, avoiding domestic washing or chemical solvents.
