Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Incised 'FOREIGN' mark on the top edge: applied under British import legislation.
Inset glass eyes: traditional practice for carved animal figures.
Gouge marks across the plumage: hand carving rather than machine pressing.
Rubbed finish across the book spines: handling over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black Forest carving originated in the region around Brienz, Switzerland, in the early nineteenth century. Woodcarvers gained international fame for their detailed depictions of wildlife, foliage, and rustic figures, creating functional and decorative objects for wealthy travellers and Grand Tour collectors.

These pieces were typically carved from local softwoods such as linden wood, walnut, or pearwood. Details such as eyes were frequently crafted from inset coloured glass or horn to enhance realism.

Authentic period pieces exhibit sharp hand-chiselled detailing, natural wood grain variation, and genuine age patina. Inset glass eyes should be set smoothly into the wood, and the weight should feel solid with evidence of hand-finishing along the underside and gouge marks.

Carved bookends can be placed on a mahogany executive desk, a contemporary floating bookshelf, or a fireplace mantelpiece. They serve as tactile decorative accents that introduce natural wood tones and historical craftsmanship into minimalist or eclectic schemes.

Keep carved wooden objects away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Dust regularly with a soft dry brush and occasionally apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish to protect the wood finish.
