Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Vertical seams in the sheet iron: hand assembly before machine pressing.
Cast brass paw feet and lion-mask handles: early nineteenth-century mounts.
Hand-painted floral sprays on green ground: decorative tole painting of the Regency era.
Original interior metal liner: heavy oxidisation and patina from long domestic use.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency period toleware coal receiver takes the form of a lidded bin fashioned from japanned metal with a soft sage green finish. The domed lid bears a repeating leaf border, a central floral motif, and a turned brass knob finial on top, while the tapered body shows hand-painted pink roses and yellow daisies. Ring drop handles hang from lion mask mounts on either side, and the container stands on four cast metal hairy paw feet. Wear to the painted surface indicates its age, and the interior retains a lift-out metal liner. Measuring 44 cm by 40 cm by 29 cm, this coal bin suits placement beside a fireplace hearth or as an accent piece in a living room. It functions practically for storing hearth accessories or display purposes in a traditional or period interior.

FAQs

Regency toleware refers to painted or lacquered tinplate and sheet metal items produced during the early 19th century, characterised by decorative hand-painted motifs such as florals and classical scrollwork.

These containers were typically constructed from rolled sheet iron or tinplate, finished with protective painted enamel or japanned lacquer, and fitted with cast brass or iron claw feet and drop handles.

Authentic period pieces display signs of age such as gentle paint wear, fine crazing in the lacquer finish, hand-applied brushstrokes, and period-appropriate joinery on the handles and feet.

Place the vessel beside a living room hearth to store kindling or fire logs, or repurpose it as a planter or umbrella stand in a hallway or conservatory.

Dust the painted surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid water, harsh solvents, or abrasive cleaners, and keep the item away from excessive damp to prevent metal oxidisation.
