Mid-victorian Rosewood & Japanned Papier-mâché Coffee Table, C.1850–1870

19th century
Description

A unique mid-Victorian coffee table, combining a dark rosewood carved base with a richly decorated japanned papier-mâché tray top. Both components date from the mid-19th century, circa 1850–1870, and were later brought together to create the present table.

The rectangular tray-form top has a raised rim running around the entire edge and is decorated throughout with flowers, foliage and fruit in gilt and coloured detail against a dark japanned ground. The floral decoration continues onto the raised border surrounding the tray.

The base is formed from dark rosewood with carved cabriole legs and a shaped carved apron.

Tables of this type were created by cabinetmakers and restorers by combining earlier antique components, particularly decorative papier-mâché trays with Victorian footstool or low-table bases. This produced individual pieces that retained the age, craftsmanship and decorative character of the original 19th-century elements while creating a practical piece of furniture for modern interiors.

The result is a particularly unusual and decorative coffee table, with a useful size and proportions for a living room or seating area. It works especially well as an interior design piece, combining genuine Victorian components with a form that remains practical for everyday use.

This mid-Victorian coffee table dates from the period circa 1850–1870. The piece combines a dark rosewood carved base with a rectangular japanned papier-mâché tray top. The black ground features detailed gilt and coloured botanical motifs of flowers, foliage and fruit across the flat surface and the raised rim. The supporting base incorporates dark rosewood cabriole legs with carved knees, claw feet, and a shaped carved apron. The dimensions measure 40.5 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. In a modern home, this low table serves as a functional centrepiece in a living room or seating area. The surface accommodates everyday items while adding visual interest through its nineteenth-century decorative motifs and dark wood structure. Cabinetmakers and restorers constructed tables of this type by joining antique papier-mâché trays with low-table bases, producing a practical furnishing for contemporary interiors.

Japanned papier-mache furniture refers to decorative pieces produced primarily in the 19th century, featuring molded paper pulp hardened with oil and lacquer, finished with oriental-inspired hand-painted designs and gilding.

Sheets of paper were soaked in paste, pressed into iron molds, baked, and saturated with linseed oil. Once hardened, the surfaces were hand-planed, coated in dark asphaltum varnish, decorated with gold leaf or mother-of-pearl, and mounted on wooden leg bases.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit dense, heavy pulp construction with hand-painted gold leaf detailing showing natural craquelure or age wear. The underside typically shows a smooth, dark lacquered finish rather than modern synthetic coatings.

A low japanned tray table serves as a focal coffee table in living rooms, contrasting structured modern upholstery with dark lacquered surfaces, metallic gilding, and organic foliate motifs.

Clean surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding water and solvent cleaners which dissolve traditional shellac lacquer. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent warping or lacquer flaking.
