This eighteenth century classical wine cistern takes the form of an elongated oval basin carved from natural stone. The weathered grey marble displays subtle fissures, surface pitting, and an aged matte texture across the hand-finished body. An exaggerated moulded rim juts sharply outward above a gently tapered waist, while the entire vessel rests securely upon a sturdy, circular pedestal base with a stepped plinth. The piece measures 51 cm high, 86.5 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, offering substantial presence as an architectural accessory. Interior settings, conservatories, and sheltered garden terraces provide ideal locations for this versatile container, which functions naturally as a traditional wine cooler or decorative planter. The grand regency styling integrates seamlessly into classical or transitional interior schemes, serving as a striking focal point on a low table or directly on the floor. Sturdy construction ensures everyday utility, while the historic stone surface brings organic character and a sense of architectural heritage to contemporary domestic spaces.

In the 18th century, carved marble cisterns were predominantly utilised in grand dining rooms or formal gardens to hold water or ice for chilling wine bottles and rinsing service items.

Classical cisterns were carved by stonemasons from solid blocks of natural marble or limestone, incorporating thick walls, heavy pedestal bases, and moulded rims designed to support substantial water weight.

Authentic period stone cisterns display hand-carved tool marks, uneven surface patination, organic weathering, and subtle mineral deposits or calcification caused by long-term moisture exposure.

An antique marble cistern serves as a dramatic centrepiece in an orangery, a rustic planting vessel within a courtyard garden, or a sculptural feature in a modern minimalist hall.

Maintain weathered marble by brushing gently with clean water and a soft bristle brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and ensuring outdoor vessels have adequate drainage to prevent freeze-thaw damage.
