Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Impressed Adams Tunstall mark: Staffordshire production following the late-Victorian factory reorganisation.
Applied white sprigged decoration: cleanly defined classical figures and foliate borders.
Cobalt blue dipped body: standard late nineteenth-century stoneware manufacturing method.
Unglazed underside with ingrained foot-rim discolouration: normal surface age from long domestic show.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This late nineteenth-century English Victorian blue jasper ware jardiniere originates from William Adams and Sons. The stoneware ceramic piece displays a striking cobalt blue matte finish paired with contrasting white sprigged applique decorations, including a foliate rim border, classical relief figures, and prominent tree motifs. Turned mouldings run around the upper body and the base, complemented by detailed relief carving across the surface. The rounded vessel measures 19.5 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 22 cm deep. Suitable for display in a traditional English country house interior, the jardiniere functions practically as a planter for houseplants or small florals. It rests securely on a flat base and sits well upon a deep window sill, table, or sideboard. The distinct colour combination of rich blue and crisp white brings decorative classical appeal to everyday living spaces, integrating easily into various household rooms as a functional ceramic vessel.

Jasperware is a type of stoneware ceramic first developed in 18th-century England, characterized by its unglazed matte finish and raised relief decorations. Often produced in shades of blue, green, or black, it features contrasting white classical scenes inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art.

Jasperware jardinieres are crafted from dense stoneware coloured with metallic oxides, such as cobalt oxide for blue hues. Decorative white motifs are created separately using plaster moulds and applied by hand to the vessel body in a process known as sprigging before firing.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature crisp, detailed relief work without blurred edges or excess glue lines. Look for impressed maker marks or potter initials on the underside, as well as a heavy, fine-grained stoneware body rather than lightweight earthenware.

A jasperware jardiniere serves as a focal point on a sideboard, console, or deep window sill when paired with indoor foliage like ferns or orchids. The contrast between the matte blue surface and green leaves enhances both traditional and modern interior schemes.

Clean jasperware gently using warm water and a mild soap with a soft soft-bristled brush to remove dust from intricate relief areas. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or submersion in hot water, and ensure the piece is thoroughly dried.
