This Arts and Crafts lamp table dates from 1910 and follows the Japan Sunflower pattern associated with Liberty. The piece has a circular top in dark stained oak with a dark brown timber colour, complemented by carved sunflower motifs around the rim and an undertier carved with leaves matching the border. Three curved and sculptured legs support the round surfaces, rising from simple pointed feet with visible scuffs and scratches on the edges showing signs of age. The timber exhibits surface wear and minor knocks from previous use. Measuring 66 cm high and 46 cm in diameter, the table functions practically as a convenient end-of-a-sofa surface for holding a lamp or small ornaments. It suits traditional interiors such as an English country house living room or study, where it provides a compact display space next to seating.

FAQs

Originating in the late nineteenth century, this style combines traditional British woodcraft with Japanese aesthetic influences, characterised by organic motifs, dark timber finishes, and asymmetrical or slender structural forms.

These tables were typically constructed from solid oak or walnut, featuring hand-carved decorative surfaces, joined construction, and stained or waxed finishes that highlighted the natural wood grain.

Authentic pieces display period-accurate joinery, hand-carved botanical or geometric motifs, natural wear consistent with age, and occasionally maker stamps or metal badges beneath the top or lower shelf.

Position the table beside contemporary seating to create contrast, using the top surface for a ceramic reading lamp or sculptural vase while keeping decor minimal to highlight the carved wood details.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, taking care to buff gently out of intricate carvings to prevent build-up.
