This Edwardian Arts and Crafts side table follows the aesthetic of the period with a square top above two lower display shelves. Constructed from dark brown walnut and lighter contrasting satin walnut, the timber shows rich grain patterns across the tiered surfaces. The design includes fretwork arches beneath the top and second tier, slender turned spindles separating the levels, and four splayed feet that taper gracefully to the floor. Light age-related wear is visible on the polished wood edges. Measuring 74.5 cm high, 51 cm wide and 50 cm deep, the table functions practically in a modern sitting room as an end table beside a sofa or armchair for holding lamps, books or decorative objects. The compact footprint makes it suitable for placement in hallways, studies or corners where additional display space is required.

FAQs

Arts and Crafts side tables emphasise honest joinery, functional geometry, and subtle ornamental elements such as carved fretwork or decorative spindles, reflecting the late nineteenth-century movement away from mass production.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense hardwoods including oak, mahogany, and walnut, frequently incorporating contrasting wood inlays, turned spindles, and cut-out timber galleries.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise and tenon joinery, genuine age-related wear to shelves and feet, precise fretwork carving, and proportions typical of the turn of the twentieth century.

Position the piece as an end table or bedside table, styling the upper surface with a clean-lined modern lamp to contrast with the detailed woodwork and lower gallery shelving.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish along the grain twice a year, ensuring the table remains situated away from direct heat and damp.
