What Are Smokers Cabinets?
Small cabinets for pipes and tobacco became standard domestic furniture in the later nineteenth century, as indoor smoking acquired its own equipment. The usual arrangement is a single glazed or panelled door over a drawer or a fitted interior, sized for a table or sideboard rather than the floor. Production carried on into the early twentieth century, when they were made in quantity for middle-class homes.
Oak dominates. It is named in 24 of the 29 titles on Sellingantiques, and the plain Edwardian oak cabinet of roughly 1900 to 1915 is what you are most likely to meet: nine listings are dated to the 1900s, six to the 1910s. That group accounts for around two-thirds of the category.
Beyond it, a smaller group carries a carved or Arts and Crafts character, and three cabinets are mahogany, including an inlaid pipe cabinet with a fitted clock and an Art Nouveau hanging version. One English burr walnut and brass cigar cabinet, or humidor, dated around 1880, sits well above the rest and is a different thing altogether.
Dating is loose. The dated field runs 1880 to 1930, and twenty-one listings give a clean year, but dealers use period labels freely: one titled as George V is dated Edwardian, and one called Victorian is dated 1880. Read any single year as an estimate. A few pieces here are described simply as small hanging or tabletop cabinets, so the heading covers a narrow band of small domestic cupboards rather than one fixed pattern.
Where The Range Sits
Timber does most of the sorting. Plain oak runs from the bottom of the range to the middle and well up it, while the three mahogany cabinets both sit in the upper half and the single burr walnut cigar cabinet stands far above everything else. Within oak itself, the divider is decoration: carved oak and inlaid mahogany titles appear near the top, and the lowest entries carry no decorative term at all.
