The form that dominates is the drawered specimen chest in mahogany. Mahogany appears in 258 titles, and "drawer" or "drawers" in nearly half of them, because the count is the measure: 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 30, 40. Twelve and twenty drawer cabinets recur more than any others.
Purpose-built cabinets of shallow drawers were made from the eighteenth century on to house private natural-history and antiquarian collections, where dust exclusion and uniform shallow depth mattered more than volume. The form multiplied through the nineteenth century as natural history became a widespread middle-class pursuit and specialist London suppliers worked to standard patterns.

Timber sorts the middle. Solid mahogany and Honduras mahogany cluster high; stained and polished deal, often with mahogany drawer fronts on a softwood carcase, clusters low. Burr walnut, figured veneers, amboyna and satinwood turn up at the upper end, as do marquetry and inlay on the continental cabinets on stands.
Then there is what the title can prove. A named trade supplier lifts a cabinet above an unattributed one of the same drawer count, and so does stated provenance - Cambridge University geology and museum cabinets, a British Museum source, cabinets attributed to named nineteenth-century naturalists.
