19th century
Description

A rare small Regency rosewood and brass boulle marquetry collectors cabinet on stand circa 1815 attributed to Louis Le Gaigneur the top with a hinged door revealing an interior with five long drawers on a stand profusely inlaid with brass on cabriole legs terminating.

This beautiful small

cabinet on stand is in original condition with no damage or restoration and the rosewood has gone a lovely faded honey colour throughout.

Size : 19 inches wide 11 inches deep 47 inches high

Louis le Gaigneur was probably an expatriate French artisan first recorded in Queen Street (now Harrowby Street) off Edgware Road in circa 1815, and also recorded in nearby Homer Street in 1808, who produced brass-inlaid furniture in the newly revived 'Buhl' style. A pair of library tables in the form of bureaux Mazarin were supplied by Le Gaigneur to the Prince Regent at Brighton Pavilion in 1815 (RCIN 35289; now in Windsor Castle); and a similar desk is in the Wallace Collection (F479).

Macintosh Antiques has dated this Regency Rosewood Boulle Cabinet to the Regency era.

A Regency rosewood and brass boulle marquetry collectors cabinet on stand dates to circa 1815 and is attributed to Louis Le Gaigneur. The piece uses rosewood and brass materials, showing a faded honey colour finish with green and gold tones in the marquetry inlay. The upper cabinet features a single hinged door decorated with intricate brass scrollwork, a top brass gallery rim, and stands upon tall cabriole legs with carved scroll motifs along the frieze. Measuring 119 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 28 cm deep, the cabinet provides compact storage suited for display in a living room, study, or hallway as a decorative accent piece.

Regency Boulle marquetry furniture is characterized by the technique of inlaying cut brass brass patterns into dark hardwoods, predominantly rosewood or ebony. Popularised in England during the early nineteenth century by cabinetmakers such as Louis Le Gaigneur, this style draws upon earlier French seventeenth-century Boulle metalwork techniques.

Pieces from this era typically feature dense Brazilian rosewood veneers combined with cut sheet brass, brass galleries, and cast brass mounts. The structural frames were crafted from solid oak or pine secondary woods to support the delicate exterior veneers.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-cut brass scrollwork, natural patination on both the metal and wood, and period-correct construction techniques such as hand-dovetailed drawer joints and brass gallery rims secured with small iron screws.

A slender cabinet on stand functions as a focal accent piece in modern hallway, drawing room, or study settings. Its warm wood tones and brass highlights contrast cleanly against plain painted walls, providing vertical height without occupying extensive floor area.

Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement that could lift brass inlays. Dust surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners, applying a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly to the wood while keeping brasswork dry.
