The form you'll meet most often is a glazed or panelled cabinet with one or two doors. Dating is loose. The dealer's date field says simply "Victorian" for around 800 listings and "19th Century" for a further 200, so fewer than half carry a clean year. Where years are given they cluster in the 1880s, with the 1890s, 1860s and 1870s close behind, the 1850s thinner and the 1900s trailing away.
The Range
Timber sets the floor and the ceiling. Satinwood, burr walnut and figured veneers recur at the upper end, and the title vocabulary runs wider than in most furniture groupings: amboyna, kingwood, pollard oak, satin birch, cedar, teak and yew all appear. Pine, deal and bamboo cluster at the bottom.
Decorative work moves a cabinet up. Inlay appears in a few hundred titles, marquetry in fewer, and gilt metal or ormolu mounts in fewer again; the highest-priced examples tend to combine marquetry with mounts and applied porcelain plaques. Scale and shape count too, with breakfront, serpentine and bow-fronted cabinets sitting well above table-top and wall-hanging ones.
In collectors' cabinets the drawers do the arguing. Samples run from six or eight at the modest end up to sixteen, twenty-four, thirty-six and forty graduated drawers, one forty-drawer mahogany cabinet carrying a Carrara marble top. A few still hold what they were made for: tropical insects, British moths and butterflies, a slide cabinet with 280 microscope slides.
