19th Century French Pine Painted Cabinet

19th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

A French pine painted cabinet

The central panelled cupboard flanked by two banks of 4 drawers, the cupboard opens to two small internal drawers. With original lock and key.

French, circa 1850-1880

In the original aged paint, the cupboard opens on ‘Parliament’ hinges, to allow the door to open fully over the drawer knobs, internally to the right of the cupboard is a wooden locking catch that locks all four of the drawers via a notch in the drawer, so when the cupboard is locked with the key the drawers are also locked, sadly the mechanism on the left is missing.

Date of Manufacture

Baggott & Co. has dated this French Painted Pine Cabinet to the 19th Century.

This 19th-century French provincial storage cabinet stands 67.5 cm high, 95.5 cm wide, and 29 cm deep. Constructed from pine, the piece has a painted cream and ochre finish showing original age and wear. The cabinet rests on a dark brown wooden stand and features a moulded cornice above a central raised panel door. This central cupboard is flanked by two banks of small drawers fitted with turned wooden knobs and metal hardware. The exterior displays detailed surface mouldings, a keyhole escutcheon, and visible hinges alongside signs of historical use. In a contemporary home, the cabinet serves as a versatile tabletop storage unit for living spaces, bedrooms, or studies. The central door opens to reveal internal storage compartments, while the flanking drawers provide organised space for small items. The combination of cream paint, ochre tones, and textured wooden surfaces makes the cabinet a practical addition to interiors favouring rustic or antique French chateau furnishings. The compact footprint allows the piece to fit easily onto sideboards, desks, or low tables without taking up floor space.

Originating in regional France during the 19th century, these cabinets were typically constructed from local pine timber and finished with painted or polychrome coats. They served practical storage functions in domestic settings, housing tools, spices, or documents within multi-drawer or small cupboard configurations.

These pieces were built using pine wood, often featuring hand-cut joinery, hand-planed rear boards, and moulded panel doors. Surface finishes comprised hand-applied paint distempers or gesso washes in earth tones such as ochre, terracotta red, and off-white.

Authentic examples exhibit genuine paint wear on high-touch surfaces such as wooden knobs and frame edges, along with historical hardware like iron hinges or cast escutcheons. The unpainted timber underside and interior display age-related shrinkage and wood oxidisation.

A small painted cabinet serves as a textured focal point when placed atop a console, counter, or desk in contemporary spaces. Its distressed paint finish introduces historic character and visual depth against neutral, modern backdrops.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent wood movement and flaking paint. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid chemical cleaners or water, which can damage original distemper or polychrome layers.
