Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Coopered oak staves bound with copper: traditional barrel-making techniques.
Copper bands with chamfered overlaps and dome rivets: standard late Victorian hall fittings.
Dark, mature surface colour across the timber: decades of handling and wax.
Fitted sheet-metal drip pan with wire ring: practical domestic metalwork.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian English country house umbrella stand takes the form of a solid oak coopered sherry or whisky barrel with an oval outline. Constructed from quality dark brown oak staves that bow outwards at the centre, the tapered barrel design is secured by four riveted copper binding hoops. The dark timber exhibits a rich gradation of brown hues, a good surface patina and visible signs of age and wear. Standing at 57 cm high, 40 cm wide and 32 cm deep, the stand incorporates a generous interior storage space and a removable drip tray. It is suited for placement in a hallway beside the front door to hold walking sticks and umbrellas.

FAQs

A coopered barrel umbrella stand is a cylindrical hallway storage vessel crafted by coopers using wooden staves joined together and secured with metal hoops, adapted historically for holding walking sticks and umbrellas.

These pieces were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak or mahogany for the staves, secured with hand-fitted copper or brass hoops and riveted metal fasteners.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-riveted metal straps, natural shrinkage lines between the wooden staves, historic patination on the metalwork, and signs of genuine wear on the interior base from usage.

Position the piece in an entryway or hallway beside a front door to store umbrellas, walking canes, or riding crops, adding warmth and historical texture to modern or traditional country interiors.

Clean the timber periodically with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish along the grain. Avoid wet environments to prevent timber swelling, and maintain metal straps with light wax to protect oxidisation.
