Japanese Porcelain Pair of Kutani Ware Miniature Bowls, Meiji Period Circa 1880

19th century
Description

These superb miniature porcelain bowls originate from the Kutani region of Japan, dating from the Meiji period, circa 1880. They are superb examples of some of their finest workmanship, which is rarely available to purchase. This tiny pair of bowls is intricately hand decorated with the interior beautifully painted and gilded with an amazing display of intricate flowers and foliage with a fine scrolling boarder around the rim. The decoration is produced in thin and thick coloured enamels, highlighted with rich gilding, some of which are raised, giving an almost three dimensional appearance. The outside of the bowls by contrast, is boldly decorated with a traditional scroll and stylised flower broad boarder in rich colours with detailed gilding. These fine porcelain bowls are hand signed on their bases with Japanese character marks. Both pieces are in pristine condition. Japanese circa 1880

After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

This pair of Japanese Kutani ware miniature bowls originates from the Meiji period, circa 1880. Made from porcelain with enamel and gold leaf, the pieces display a maximalist wonderland style with an interior painted and gilded with intricate flowers, foliage, and chrysanthemum motifs. The decoration incorporates thin and thick coloured enamels alongside raised gilding, complemented by a scalloped rim, an iron-red brocade border, and a gilt rim in red and gold. The objects measure 3 cm high, 6 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. In a contemporary home, these bowls suit placement on a bookshelf as decorative accents. The pair offers delicate craftsmanship intended for display within a cabinet or on a shelf, bringing traditional Japanese artistry into an interior space. Each bowl stands ready for collection by a collector of fine Asian ceramics.

Kutani ware is a traditional style of Japanese porcelain originating from Kaga Province, recognised for vivid overglaze enamel decoration, intricate brushwork, and frequent integration of gold gilding.

Kutani ceramics are crafted from kaolin ceramic clay, embellished with vitreous enamel glazes in signature colours, and detailed using fine gold leaf or painted liquid gold accents.

Pieces from the Meiji era generally demonstrate extremely fine hand-painted polychrome decoration, prominent iron-red borders with complex geometric or foliage patterns, and authentic artist signatures on the underside.

Miniature decorative ceramics are best styled within glass vitrines, placed on a console table tray, or layered alongside books on shelving units to add historic depth and texture.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, avoiding water submersion, abrasive sponges, and chemical cleaners that could strip delicate gold gilding or enamel glazes.
