This is an English Victorian privacy screen, dating to circa 1870 as a four-panel room divider in mahogany. The framework presents rich caramel hues with fine grain interest, supporting panels dressed front and rear in textured paper with relief patterns in the Chinoiserie taste. These embossed panels display a warm brown background with dark decorative motifs depicting temples and botanical detail. Two-way brass hinges between each panel allow for a variety of standing positions and enable the panels to accordion completely flat against one another. Visible details include solid joints, a desirable aged patina, and gently time-worn order on the surfaces. The room divider measures 159.5 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 12 cm deep when folded, with a maximum free-standing width of 219 cm. In a contemporary home, it functions effectively as a true room divider perpendicular to a wall, or alternatively can be affixed to a wall as a distinctive headboard. The versatile folding manner permits easy storage and repositioning within domestic spaces.

Victorian Chinoiserie room dividers combine Western furniture frames with decorative panels influenced by East Asian art, characterised by depictions of pavilions, flora, and landscapes popular during the 19th century.

These screens were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood for the framing, fitted with brass hinges, and filled with inset panels of embossed paper, painted canvas, or woven silk.

Authentic period examples feature hand-assembled timber joins, original brass double-action or bi-fold hinges, natural age-related wear to the timber finish, and period-correct backing fabrics.

A screen can be positioned behind a sofa, used to partition open-plan living areas, or placed in a bedroom corner to add architectural interest and visual depth without permanent structural alterations.

Keep the screen away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent timber warping and paper deterioration; clean the wooden frame with microcrystalline wax and gently dust panels with a soft brush.
