This Howard and Sons side table dates from 1900 and represents the Chippendale Revival style. Constructed from mahogany, it displays a dark brown tone with a rich flame mahogany veneer across the circular top. Decorative elements include detailed knee carvings, cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, and a moulded edge around the tabletop. A small area of polish degradation is present on the top surface, alongside typical Howard numbering. The piece measures 67 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this occasional table functions effectively at the end of a sofa or as a compact display stand in a living room, hallway, or study. Its traditional English country house aesthetic integrates seamlessly into classic and period settings as a practical surface for lamps, books, or decorative items.

Occasional tables produced in this style typically feature classical 18th-century design elements, such as cabriole legs, carved knee detailing, and fine mahogany veneers, popularised during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

These pieces are predominantly constructed using solid mahogany for structural legs and framework, complemented by decorative flame mahogany veneers on the tabletop and apron, assembled with traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity can be determined by examining construction details such as hand-carved decorative motifs, original maker stamps or badges on the underside, natural timber grain variations, and age-consistent wear along the feet and joints.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to hold modern lighting, or place it in a hallway topped with a ceramic vessel to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying high-grade beeswax once or twice a year, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiator heat sources to prevent timber movement.
