This Edwardian side table dates from the early 20th century and takes the form of a small freestanding occasional table. Constructed from dark brown mahogany, the wood displays a visible natural grain throughout the flat shaped top and frame. The structure stands on four square tapered legs with chamfered corners and block feet, linked near the base by a pierced fretwork X-stretcher. Rising from the centre of this intersecting stretcher is a turned finial with a pointed bulbous profile. The proportions measure 67.5 cm wide by 47.5 cm deep and 68 cm high, offering a compact surface area suitable for placement at the end of a sofa in a living room, beside a bed in a bedroom, or against a wall in a hallway. The piece is suited for holding a small lamp, books or decorative objects within a traditional English country house interior.

FAQs

Edwardian side tables, dating from 1901 to 1910, feature lighter proportions than Victorian antecedents, utilizing mahogany construction and drawing inspiration from 18th-century designs with delicate fretwork and carved stretchers.

The primary timber utilised in Edwardian side table construction was solid mahogany or mahogany veneer, frequently combined with carved detailing, turned finials, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces display natural timber grain patterns, evidence of historical hand-finishing, aged patination on lower surfaces, and period-correct joinery methods across the legs and carved stretchers.

Position the table beside contemporary seating or within a hallway to create contrast between the dark polished timber and light, modern upholstery or neutral walls.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber movement, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain.
